Sustainability

AIRPOWER24: Sustainability report documents reductions in the areas of energy, supply, catering and fleet management.

In spring 2023, the AIRPOWER24 project team was commissioned by Minister of Defense Klaudia Tanner to plan and implement the event again as a “role model” for a sustainable major event following the successful sustainability efforts of AIRPOWER22. The topic of sustainability was a top priority for everyone involved and was consistently integrated as a cross-cutting issue in all planning steps for AIRPOWER24. The final sustainability report is now available, for which a total of over 140,000 data entries were recorded for the greenhouse gas balance.

The results in the Austrian Armed Forces’ own area were particularly impressive:

  • Almost 100% of the catering and infrastructure contracts were awarded to regional companies. This resulted in a high level of regional added value and reduced transportation requirements.
  • The increased availability of meat-free meals, including during the preparations for AIRPOWER24 in the local troop kitchen, also reduced the carbon footprint in this area by more than 50%.
  • Almost 100 % of the power supply is provided by certified green electricity.
  • The accommodation for the soldiers involved was located as close as possible to the event site and transportation was ensured using large-capacity vehicles instead of small cars. Thanks to the efficient use of transportation and the reduction of the vehicle fleet, it was even possible to save 82% of emissions from the mobility of our own employees compared to 2022.

Evaluation by the Federal Environment Agency

The sustainability report for AIRPOWER24 was independently and externally evaluated by the Federal Environment Agency. The Federal Environment Agency assessed the overall quality of the selected methodology and its application in the analysis as very good and appropriate for the objectives and purposes of the greenhouse gas balance; according to the Federal Environment Agency, the methodology is transparently documented.
