The AERO L-39NG (Next Generation) is a turbofan-powered military trainer and light combat aircraft developed and produced by Czech aircraft manufacturer AERO Vodochody. It is a successor to the Cold War-era AERO L-39 Albatross.
The L-39NG represents a new generation of modern and cost-effective jet trainers based on the historical heritage of the proven and reliable L-39 Albatross. The design of the L-39NG reflects the valuable inputs of the various operators and meets the current and future requirements of air forces worldwide. Designed primarily as a basic and advanced jet trainer, the L-39NG can perform various other missions, including air support and reconnaissance.
On 14th September 2015, the maiden flight of the L-39NG technology demonstrator (L-39CW) was conducted, and in March 2018, the L-39CW received type certification. Then, in December 2018, the first L-39NG prototype completed its first flight. In September 2020, the Czech Ministry of Defence certified the L39NG to military standards.
The L-39NG project was divided into two distinct phases or versions. The Stage 1 programme is an upgrade available to existing L-39- operators; the original airframes are retrofitted with a new engine and (optionally) modern avionics. The Stage2 programme includes the production of new-build aircraft; these benefit from several design improvements, such as the use of a special wing eliminating the characteristic wing-tip fuel tanks of the original L-39.
Numerous civil and military customers have already ordered the L-39NG, including a special reconnaissance variant.
