BELL AH-1 "COBRA"

Built since 1966, the Cobra was the first real attack helicopter worldwide. Its modern, narrow fuselage, providing a small target to enemy fire, was an example for all other attack helicopters to be built afterwards. For a long time, the Bell AH-1 was the classical gunship of the US Army, used above all in the Vietnam War.

The helicopter shown at AIRPOWER16 is remarkable for several reasons: it was built in the 1980ies as a single-engine aircraft, then completely disassembled and demilitarized, in order to be reassembled afterwards. Later on, the helicopter was not only a star at numerous air shows but it was also used in TV series like "JAG" or "Walker, Texas Ranger". The Flying Bulls were able to purchase this helicopter in 2004, thus possessing the last airworthy model of this single-engine version and, besides that, the only Cobra within Europe.
